In this 2016 Cancer New Moon Chart the Sun and Moon are in opposition to ole’ mighty Pluto. Well, there’s about a 4-degree orb in the opposition with the Sun Moon at 13 Cancer and Pluto at 17 Capricorn but that’s close enough to get folks into a tissy. Let’s take a look at what astrologer, April Elliott Kent, wrote in the final line of her recent newsletter (which I highly recommend you subscribe to here):
“This is a pretty intense New Moon, in opposition to Pluto, an intractable combination that lends itself to passionate conflict. Throw an awakened Mars in Scorpio into the mix, and... well, let's just see if we can prevent each other from getting into too much trouble.”
-April Elliott Kent
When I was a new student to astrology warnings like the one above would always put me into a fearful tailspin. What should I be looking for? A car crash? A death of a loved one? A burglary? I don’t think any astrologer intentionally dangles out “trouble”-some warnings to make her readers fearful. This approach could be rationalized like so: “Hey, life’s not all rose colored glasses and I need to prepare my audience for pitfalls when I see them.”
In the artistry of writing April took an approach similar in fashion to the final chord of The Beatle’s song, “A Day in the Life.” She has that dramatic crescendo of “lends itself to passionate conflict” only to segue her piece into this long hanging “let’s just see if we can prevent each other from getting into too much trouble.” What kind of trouble is involved? How can I avoid it? It just feels all so unresolved to me…a bit scary.
I feel a deep connection to New Moons and as an astrologer I spend a good part of my time writing about them. On a personal level I maintain a New Moon ritual and actively use this time for reflection on where I’ve been and where I want to go in my life. So I wanted to take some time to address any dangling fears anyone, myself included, might have with this Pluto opposition and what we may do to address it…and for this I invite the facts!
5 Facts About the New Moon Pluto Opposition
1. This is the summer of 2016. (I hate reading years old astrology articles and not having a timestamp for what the authors are exploring. I’ve just given you my official timestamp. If you’re a podcaster or article writer please refer to the year more often.)
2. Pluto went into Capricorn November 26, 2008 at least in USA Mountain Time Zone.
3. Signed Based oppositions happen in 6-pairs of the Zodiac including: Cancer and Capricorn.
4. 2009 to 2015 is the passage of 6 years.
5. Since 2009 to 2015 – 2 of the 6 Cancer New Moons were within about 3-degrees of a Pluto opposition and those years were: 2009 and 2011 (if you extend it to a 6-degree orb you can throw in 2013).
Congrats You've Survived New Moons Opposite Pluto!
If you’re still reading this right now chances are you survived the New Moon / Pluto oppositions of 2009 and 2011. And if you’re like me you have zero memory of what the hell happened during those times! So as scary as this opposition may be and as much angst as you may or may not feel going through it, it is just a transit. No amount of fear or apprehension will better get your through the cycle but perhaps a little personal reflection will help.
Looking back at 2009 and 2011 there’s no major specific event that I can recall tied to this opposition. I still have all my limbs (thank the lord), I’m still with my wife (we’re going on 14-years) and I wasn’t involved in any bar fights during those oppositions. I would say these were intense lunar months or cycles. They highlighted more active themes of friends, artistry and home.
Behind the Scenes with Cancer New Moons
Lunar Month in Cancer 2009
I was diligently working in June of 2009 to get my punk band, The Gouts, together. Capricorn and Cancer mark the 5th and 11th whole-sign houses of my birthchart respectively and this information serves greatly to prompt my memory of how I felt and what was going on during this time. (Astrology makes for an excellent mnemonic device.) As the transit of Sun conjunct Moon opposite Pluto suggests there was an intensity pulsing in my life. I'd only lived in Los Angeles for about 9 months and was largely unrooted from my friends and family back home in Denver. I was striving to make music and wield new friends who might work within a shared vision. I was focused and driven and perhaps somewhat successful in my music endeavors at that time. I was striving to reinvent myself while at the same time trying be part of something larger than myself, the punk rock, D.I.Y. , music scene. As fanciful as this dream may seem I have a Capricorn Sun so I had a very practical leaning that my art should yield income at this time. A belief I’ve since recanted and an aspiration that hasn’t materialized as of 2016. Reflecting over this I can see this transit psychologically emboldened my efforts and perhaps working from that intensity helped me get some people on board with my vision. I had a drummer and bass player willing to play along for a bit. The issue? Transits are sort lived. The creative charisma I had at that time would help me win a few battles but not the long-term war of finding my tribe and making music in Los Angeles.
Lunar Month in Cancer 2011
My pregnant wife and I moved into a new apartment. In the 13th hour I was able to call on the help from two friends to get the final push done of moving stuff out. My wife could not do any lifting at this time. It was tough but we had the power to push through! My wife’s mother was in town, adding to the motherly Cancer themes.
A lot was up in the air at this time. Little did I know then my job was in jeopardy and I would lose it about 6-months later. I was dealing with the added excitement and stress that comes with being a father to be.
Looking back at this transit in my life, I find this cycle positive for my ability to manifest. (This is something I never thought of until I wrote this very blog). This positivity makes sense since an opposition may be a stressful aspect but this combination highlights activities in the 5th and 11th houses in my chart. Lots of stress and intensity were present during these times, yes, but they weren’t insurmountable and to my surprise these struggles yielded some outward successes such as getting the band together and moving to a more family friendly apartment.
My points are simply these:
With that, let’s get started on ushering the New Moon in Cancer Monday, July 4, 2016 at 5:01am MDT!
The Good: Mars
Funny enough, Mars works well in this Cancer New Moon chart and here’s Five Reasons Why:
Traditionally the malefic planets are considered bad because of their instability, which is harmful to homeostasis and gives them the ability to negate life. Mars is being helped by both Venus and Jupiter in this New Moon chart and therefore stabilized in how he works in our life.
This dignified Mars will give us the ability to take strong yet stable actions. You can use this New Moon energy to be emotionally authentic and passionate in your relationships and to better understand your family. Lastly, this is a perfect lunar month to begin a workout routine, play competitive sports and/or take up a martial art.
The Bad - Saturn/Neptune Square
Saturn’s square to Neptune went exact June 17 but its impact was made fully known June 23 with Britain leaving the EU. I’m not going to preach to be some politically savvy astrologer BUT the news I read now seems like many of the Britain voters were confused by exactly what the ramifications of their vote were. People didn’t foresee the impact of what would happen in terms of racial incidents and the financial impact. Saturn’s malefic ability to negate came into full effect as Britain decided to say no to its current agreement/structure. The apparent cloudiness of the people was represented by the confusion that accompanies a Neptune transit. So beware, structures may feel arbitrary in our life now or we may have insecurity behind the “WHY” we are doing what we are doing. In this cycle our boundaries stand to be tested and if we follow Britain’s lead we stand to take bold and overreaching action without being fully informed of the consequences.
Keep in mind this is a slow moving transit that won’t even be more than 3-degrees and separating until mid-October. This energy plays a major role in people’s charts that have natal planets in the signs of Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.
This lunar month, be sure to breakdown your reasons for making decisions if doubt or external questioning begin to creep-in. Insecurity and uncertainty are all symptoms of Neptune transits. If you begin to feel this way do your best to slow down and think things through before making brash decisions.
The Interesting - Reflection with Astrology
Astrology makes an excellent tool for understanding patterns in your life. It offers a nature based theory to uncover events. It presents a lens and a voice to aspects of our reality that our linear minds don’t easily grasp. But in order to reap its benefits we need to be reflective.
By using astrology to find the two previous cycles of the Cancer New Moon in 2009 and 2011 I uncovered hidden gems about how my 5th and 11th houses operate that I would never known otherwise. I peered beyond the curtain of astrology theory and saw just what happens in my life when a Sun conjunct Moon opposes Pluto. I saw how I benefit from my friends while this cycle is activated. During these times I was faced with the entrenched stress of learning to make my way in a new home that I was not able to see what roles my friends and my 11th house connections contributed to my life during those times. Knowing this gives me a personal guiding light on how to get the most out of this Cancer lunar cycle ahead.
I would invite you to reflect on your life as well. One of my favorite quotations is from a German philosopher, Friedrich Hegel:
“The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history."
With astrology on our side we have just the tool to prove Friedrich wrong.
I think you’ll find it interesting if you look at your own life and get a better understanding of your own relationship to this New Moon/Pluto opposition.
To do this, look at what houses in your birthchart are activated with this Moon/Pluto opposition and reflect over the cycles listed below:
